Is it coincidence or sweet justice that I received my iPhone on the 30th Anniversary of the Sony Walkman? I remember my first “walkman”…actually, I never had a walkman at all. They were too expensive, so I got a Toshiba knock-off that spun all my magnetic tape. It was pretty awesome and pretty large now that I think about it. But it served me very well on all those long trips in the back seat of the car, hot afternoons on the riding mower, and hidden under my pillow at church camp to sneak a few minutes of Anthrax or Suicidal Tendencies after lights out! Now I have 32 GB of music, movies, apps, and photos in my pocket everywhere I go. It’s nice…but it’s not the same….well, I guess it’s better now isn’t it?
The BBC Magazine asks a kid to trade his iPod for a Sony Walkman for one week and report back! The kids report is well written and hillarious. My favorite line has to be: “It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape.”
Lexington musician Ben Sollee has began his Peddling Against Poverty tour this past week which will have him paking his cello over 300 miles between here and Bonnaroo. Ben will stop at various small towns along the way to bring awareness to Oxfam.org. In this video update, you can see him discuss the reason Kentucky has great horese and bourbon and watch a couple of his non-KY friends take their first sips of Kentucky’s offical soft drink, Ale-8-One.
Actor Rain Wilson, ‘Dwight Schrute’ from the NBC Show The Office, has helped to start a website called SoulPancake. The sites main purpose is to discuss spirituality and creativity in a real and honest fashion. Sounds interesting, but I haven’t dug very deep into the site’s content yet to see if it’s of any value. However, I plan too very soon. Check it out and tell me what your thoughts on it are.
Fleet Foxes: “Mykonos” - This song has been stuck in my head for the past 4 days….but if you have to have a song stuck in your head, this is a good one. Thanks Gigi.
